Salesforce Account Engagement (Pardot) is the dominant B2B marketing automation platform for companies already running Salesforce CRM. It is not the simplest tool, nor the cheapest — but for the right organisation, it delivers genuine alignment between marketing and sales that is hard to replicate with other platforms.
This review covers what Account Engagement actually does, what it does well, where it falls short, and who gets the most value from it.
What Is Salesforce Account Engagement?
Account Engagement is Salesforce's B2B marketing automation platform, formerly known as Pardot. It manages email marketing, lead scoring, marketing automation, landing pages, and campaign attribution — all connected natively to Salesforce CRM.
The platform is built around a central idea: marketing and sales should work from the same data. When a prospect fills out a form, clicks an email, or visits a key page, that information flows to the sales rep's CRM record immediately. When a lead reaches a certain engagement threshold, the system can automatically notify a sales rep or assign the lead in the queue.

What It Does Well
Native Salesforce CRM integration. This is Account Engagement's strongest differentiator. The integration with Salesforce CRM is tighter than any third-party marketing automation tool can achieve. Leads, contacts, opportunities, and campaigns stay in sync. Marketing can see sales activity. Sales can see marketing engagement. Attribution works across both systems.
Lead scoring and qualification. Account Engagement's lead scoring system — both manual rules-based scoring and Einstein's AI-driven scoring — is sophisticated. The combination of explicit scoring (based on profile data) and implicit scoring (based on behaviour) gives sales teams a genuinely useful signal for prioritising their time.
Engagement Studio. The visual automation builder handles complex if-then logic well. Nurture sequences that branch based on prospect behaviour, adjust cadence based on engagement, and trigger CRM actions at the right moment are all achievable in a well-configured Engagement Studio setup.
Campaign attribution. The ability to link marketing campaigns to Salesforce CRM opportunities and closed deals is powerful for teams that need to demonstrate marketing's business impact. Multi-touch attribution reporting is now available, making the analysis more accurate for long sales cycles.
Spam score and email compliance tools. Account Engagement includes tools to preview how emails will display across different clients, check spam scores before sending, and manage unsubscribes automatically. These built-in tools reduce the operational overhead of running compliant email programs.
Where It Falls Short
Complexity. Account Engagement is not a simple tool to set up or maintain. Lead scoring models need to be configured correctly, Engagement Studio flows need to be designed with care, and the data sync with CRM needs to be monitored. Teams without a dedicated marketing operations resource struggle to get full value from the platform.
Landing page and design tools. The landing page builder and email template editor are functional but dated compared to newer tools. Building polished, modern templates requires either HTML knowledge or a willingness to work within relatively constrained built-in options.
Reporting flexibility. Standard reporting in Account Engagement is good for the most common use cases, but custom reporting often requires exporting data to Salesforce's B2B Marketing Analytics add-on or building custom reports in Salesforce CRM. For teams with complex reporting needs, this adds cost and complexity.
Pricing. Account Engagement is expensive compared to simpler alternatives. For organisations that do not need the depth of Salesforce integration, the cost-to-value ratio is poor compared to tools like HubSpot or ActiveCampaign.

Pricing and Licensing
Account Engagement is sold in three editions: Growth, Plus, and Advanced. Each adds more features and a higher price point. The Advanced edition includes Einstein AI features and B2B Marketing Analytics.
Salesforce does not publish pricing publicly. Contracts are negotiated based on contact volume and edition. The Growth edition starts at several thousand dollars per month for most organisations. Total cost of ownership also includes implementation costs (which can be significant for complex setups) and ongoing administration.
The platform is designed for organisations that can justify the investment because of the value they get from Salesforce CRM integration. If CRM integration is not a priority, the price is hard to justify against alternatives.
Who It Is Best For
Account Engagement is the right choice for organisations that meet most of these criteria:
- Already using Salesforce CRM and committed to the Salesforce ecosystem
- B2B business model with a defined sales team and pipeline
- Longer sales cycles (weeks to months) that require sustained nurture
- Marketing team with a dedicated marketing operations resource or budget to hire one
- Need to prove marketing's impact on pipeline and revenue
If you are B2C, do not use Salesforce CRM, have a simple email marketing need, or cannot invest in proper setup and ongoing management, there are better-fit tools available.
Alternatives to Consider
HubSpot Marketing Hub — the most common alternative. Easier to use, lower cost of entry, strong for mid-market B2B. Lacks the depth of Salesforce CRM integration but is a better fit for HubSpot CRM users.
ActiveCampaign — excellent automation capabilities at a significantly lower price point. Better fit for smaller B2B teams or organisations that do not need Salesforce CRM integration.
Marketo Engage (Adobe) — the main enterprise B2B alternative. More complex than Account Engagement, better for very large organisations with sophisticated demand generation needs.
The Verdict
Salesforce Account Engagement is a genuinely powerful B2B marketing automation platform for organisations that are serious about their Salesforce investment. It delivers real alignment between marketing and sales when configured correctly and managed by the right people.
The two things it demands are justified by the results: investment (in both licensing and skilled resources) and patience (the full value takes time to realise). For organisations prepared to make both, it is one of the best B2B marketing automation platforms available.
For everyone else, there are simpler tools that deliver more value for less complexity and cost.
